Dr. Calvin Sayles

Dr. Calvin Sayles began his ministry as senior pastor on March 1, 2014.  Born in Missouri and raised in Colorado Springs, CO, Cal graduated from Colorado State University (B.A. in Psychology, 1980).  From there, he spent 23 years in the United States Army before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in May 2003.  Feeling called by God into full-time ministry, Cal pursued graduate theological education at Gardner-Webb University where he graduated with a Master of Divinity (2004) and Doctorate of Ministry (2013).

Before coming to JHBC, Cal served as senior pastor to churches in Concord, NC and Spindale, NC.  He is married to Sandy and they have two sons, Joshua and Nathan.  In his free time, Cal enjoys pottery, stained glass, learning to play the guitar, and reading from a broad spectrum of topics.

Associate Pastor for Music

Scott Davis

Rev. Scott Davis began his ministry as Associate Pastor of Music on December 11, 2017. Before coming to JHBC, he led music ministries at churches in Missouri and Iowa, and also served as Collegiate Ministries Director at the University of Missouri for the Missouri Baptist Convention. He is a graduate of Truman State University (Bachelor of Music Education, 1986) and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div., 1990).

Scott has a passion for using music to worship God and develop worship services that encourage people of all ages to engage and communicate their gratefulness to God for His great love and sacrifice for us.

Scott has been married to Ann since 1986. They have two children, Katy (who is married and living in Charlotte) and Ben (who is a student the University of Iowa). In his free time, Scott enjoys outdoor activities – hiking, biking, fishing, and other adventures.

Church Administrator

Richard Sistrunk

Richard S. Sistrunk joined the JHBC Staff as Church Administrator in August of 2011. He started his career in Information Technology with Coty in 1975 as second shift computer operator. Over his career he held various positions with Coty; the most recent being Vice President Infrastructure Services World Wide, leaving the company after 32 years in September 2007. He has also served as part time Minister of Music/Music Director at Holly Springs Baptist Church in Broadway, NC, Lillington Baptist Church in Lillington, First Baptist Church in Hope Mills and Flat Springs Baptist Church in Sanford.

He married Jackie T. Sistrunk in 1971. Jackie passed away in November 2012. She retired from teaching middle school language arts and social studies in Lee County after 28 years in 2006. They have four children, Amy, Richard, Jr., Elizabeth and Jenny and 6 grandchildren. They have resided in Lee County since 1977. Both Richard and Jackie are graduates of Campbell University, Richard with B.A. Mathematics and Jackie with B.S. Elementary Education and Masters in Reading.

Richard enjoys singing, cooking, hunting, fishing and working in the garden.

Administrative Assistant

Marva Lee Roush

Marva Lee Roush joined the JHBC staff as an Administrative Assistant in June 2007.  She started her career as a receptionist / clerk-typist working for an engineering firm in Marion, Ohio.  She was then promoted to administrative assistant for the marketing department of that same firm.  Then in 1984, she was given the opportunity to work for the president of Macola, Incorporated, which later became Macola Software.  Marva Lee earned the promotion to executive assistant working directly with the president/chief executive officer and chief financial officer.  A position she held until Macola Software was bought out by Exact Software.  After the buy-out, Marva Lee became executive assistant for the Human Resources / Payroll department. 

In June 2005, Marva Lee and her husband, Don, decided to retire from their full-time jobs in Ohio and move to Sanford, North Carolina.  They have a son, Matthew, who lives in Winnetka, IL, and a daughter Nicole Smith and husband Jamie, who lives in Raleigh.  Both Matthew and Nicole are Campbell University graduates.

Marva Lee enjoys knitting, reading, playing golf and Southern Gospel Quartet music.


Leah Perry

Leah Perry joined the JHBC Staff as the Church Pianist in February, 2020. The daughter of a Baptist minister, Leah began her music ministry at age 14 at Temple Baptist Church in Clearwater, FL, where her father served as pastor.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education from Trinity College in Dunedin, FL and has done additional study at the University of South Florida. During the week, she serves as administrative assistant at First Baptist Church in Sanford.

Before coming to JHBC, Leah was the pianist at New Hope Baptist Curch in Sanford for nine years and has filled in at varies local churches as pianist. She has taught private piano lessons for over 40 years. 

Leah is married to Daryl Perry, who serves as a musician in the praise band at First Presbyterian Church in Sanford.

Pastor Emeritus

Gilbert McDowell

Rev. Gilbert W. McDowell, pastor emeritus, served Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church for 28 years as pastor. He came to JHBC in 1964 from Pilot Baptist Church, Zebulon, NC. where he served from 1955-1964. From 1964 until 1992 he led the church through two building programs of the present education building and sanctuary. He served on the Ordination Committee of the Sandy Creek Baptist Association and remains active in the church life.

Rev. McDowell graduated from Greenwood High School, Greenwood, South Carolina. Received his Bachelor’s Degree from Furman University, Greenville, SC.  and his Batchelor of Divinity Degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC.
He and his wife, Nancy Powell McDowell have three sons. Steve and wife, Tanya of Cary, NC. They have two children, Ashley and Zachary. Stan and wife, Karen of Charlotte, NC. They have two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark and wife, Kate, and Joey. Bert and his wife Mary live in Cumming, GA. and have one daughter, Maggy.
He has many interests that have kept him busy over the years. His love for family, friends, gardening, sports, and reading (especially history) has always been a priority. His love for God’s word and understanding of people endears him to the present day congregation of JHBC. He and Nancy were honored in 2003 when the new fellowship area, McDowell Hall was named for them. He has continually led people to “deeper depths and higher heights” of God’s love.
